As an engineer, the standing joke was that if there was an operating manual, we weren’t going to read it. As the world gets more complex, it is now the first thing I read when I get something new. Did you know that you can get an “operating manual” for every new and existing employee in your organization?? Use the Profiles Performance Index (PPI) assessment.
Wait a minute, most of you have been using the ProfileXT assessment to help you select new employees and choose the employees you want to promote. Isn’t that the “operating manual” for your new and existing employees?? Not really, and here might be a good way to understand. I recently had to replace a microwave oven in my kitchen. The microwave oven had specific dimensions to allow it to be installed into an existing opening, had specific electric needs, hung on the wall, couldn’t weigh too much (so I could install it myself), and had to fasten to the top of an existing cabinet. There are hundreds of microwave ovens on the market, but only a handful of them would “fit” the specifics of my particular kitchen. There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of candidates looking for employment, but only a few of them will be a good “fit” for your particular employment opportunity. There are usually a group of individuals that could be promoted to a new position in your company. In either case, that is the reason why you use the ProfileXT assessment to determine an individual’s “fit” to a particular position.
After I narrowed down my selections of microwave ovens to ones that “fit” my needs, we made the purchase and installed the microwave oven. As I said above, in this complex world, I now owned a microwave oven that had more dials and buttons than the one I replaced. Without an operating manual, and without reading the operating manual, I was just going to get the microwave oven to perform the basics. Reading the operating manual has allowed me to take full advantage of the unique features and benefits of the particular microwave oven I ended up purchasing. It also allows me to better use the microwave in combination with other appliances in my kitchen, you know, that “teamwork” thing.
As an employer, you spend thousands (sometimes hundreds of thousands) of dollars hiring, training, and employing individuals in your organization. The traditional method of obtaining and reading the “operating manual” for your employees is through trial and error. It doesn’t need to be that way…
The PPI assessment, takes about 15 minutes to complete, and specifically measures an individual’s motivational intensity and behaviors related to productivity, quality of work, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, and adapting to change, as well as response to stress, frustration, and conflict. The output from this assessment serves as a “manager’s operating manual” for an employee, which helps managers better motivate, coach, and communicate with the employee. It also helps to predict and minimize conflict among co-workers, and provides crucial information for improving team selection and performance.
A powerful feature of the PPI is the Team Analysis Report, designed to help managers form new teams, reduce team conflict, improve team communication, improve their ability to anticipate problems, and enhance their team leadership skills.
Best of all, the PPI is extremely cost effective, and the reports are written in plain language that do not require a specialist to interpret the results.
Here are some things to consider:
- 23% of employees fail because they cannot manage emotions.
- 17% of employees fail because they lack the necessary motivation to excel.
- 15% of employees fail because they have the wrong temperament for a job.
